Would You Wear Your Stilettos to the Gym?

How crazy would it be to wear that killer pair of stilettos for your workout? You’d for sure break a sweat, but not the kind you’re aiming for. And aside from a stare or two, you might even score a beauty blister. Can you imagine trying to do squats in those heels? Ouch!

Alright, so your feet would be screaming, and you’d probably end up hurting yourself. So here’s a question: Do you really need to go through with it to know it’s impractical? I’m going to bet common sense says no.

So here’s where I’m going with this. How is it we don’t have the same sense of comfort with our navel piercings? I’m sure, if you really care for your piercing, the analogy might come across a bit extreme. Like, who in their right mind would think to wear heels at the gym? Or even worse, does this imply there are people who would wear a belly ring that fits so poorly? We have common sense; of course we’d know!

Naturally, this raises a few more questions: Who sets the standard for navel jewelry? Is it jewelry designers, trendsetters, or is it piercers that shape what we consider “normal”? And how about the time you walk out of a piercing shop with jewelry that’s just not right for you? Who’s there to say it’s not? Can common sense serve us as well as it would with wearing a pair of stilettos at the gym?

But what if you didn’t always feel the pressure? Why would you think the jewelry is not right for you? Could it be you’d end up wearing your stilettos at the gym without even realizing? The sad reality? So many are deep into their piercing journey before realizing the impact the jewelry has on their piercing or how much it’s changed. This topic is much more complex, and we’re not getting into the piercing problems like irritations, bumps, or migration, but one thing is certain: we can’t ignore how widespread the issues are. Kudos to you if you’ve spared yourself the agony. But most are not so lucky.

And so, why don’t we challenge the way we think of navel jewelry? Ultimately, it’s our bodies that say what’s normal. We move, bend, and twist: that’s friction. Your navel pushing into the jewelry: that’s pressure. We’re all unique. And with all the jewelry options that beg so many questions—like, “What the hell were those designers thinking?”—one can only ask: Isn’t it you that should care about you?
